She will be conducting research in the Department of Maritime Studies, Systems Engineering and Logistics (SAL) on the human factor, building trust in human performance, and automation systems for monitoring mixed shipping traffic and for the remote control of ships. The term ‘mixed shipping traffic’ refers to a traffic environment comprising conventionally controlled ships as well as remotely controlled and autonomously navigating ships.

At our UAS, she is supervised by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Baldauf, who teaches in the SAL department Navigation, and at the Technical University of Berlin by Prof. rer. nat. Gisela Müller-Plath, Professor of Methodology and Maritime Psychology.

Gianiti Claresta, M.Sc., has experience in maritime research, specialising in ship safety, Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) and maritime automation. Born in Jakarta, the Indonesian national first completed a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering with a double major at the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember in Surabaya. Thanks to her outstanding academic performance, she was able to write and defend her Bachelor’s thesis whilst still at the Warnemünde Campus. This was followed by a Master’s degree in Operation and Management of Maritime Systems, also at our UAS. Her academic work has focused, amongst other things, on VTS in the Sunda Strait and the Baltic Sea, navigation and alarm systems, and the impact of autonomous shipping on VTS operations. She has already presented her initial research findings on these topics at the conference of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU). She had previously gained practical experience in port and shipyard operations whilst in Indonesia.

At our UAS, Gianiti Claresta received funding for a total of six months as a student through the Women’s Advancement Fund 2.0 (graduation and research grant).

The doctoral student will also be contributing her expertise to the LEAS-Pro research project in future.
