Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Fink and laboratory engineer Michael Senke accompanied the students from the Bachelor’s programme in Mechanical Engineering and the Master’s programme in Mechanical, Process and Energy Engineering to EWN Entsorgungswerk für Nuklearanlagen GmbH on the site of the nuclear power plant, which was shut down in 1995, in the municipality of Lubmin near Greifswald. The company is responsible for the decommissioning of the nuclear power plants in Greifswald and Rheinsberg, as well as for the Nord interim storage facility, where low- to high-level radioactive materials are stored.

During the excursion, the students toured Reactor Unit 6 and learnt more about the structure, operation and dimensions of a nuclear power plant. Afterwards, staff from EWN GmbH – including an alumnus of Wismar University of Applied Sciences – presented the major challenges associated with the decommissioning of radioactively contaminated power plant components. Of particular interest were the diverse career opportunities for engineers from all disciplines involved in tackling these demanding tasks.

We would like to thank EWN GmbH for inviting us on this unique excursion.
