At our UAS’s 12th Science Slam, six early-career researchers impressed the audience with entertaining and accessible talks, each lasting a maximum of 10 minutes. The opening, which had the impact of a premiere, was delivered in the form of a rap by the Vice-Rector for Education, Prof. Dr Marianne Schmolke.

In the end, the audience’s scoring decided that Luca Lass and Thomas Kraus would share first place, each with 96 out of 100 points. Both conduct research at the Malchow site on the island of Poel and impressed with humorous insights into their current work as well as unconventional research questions.

Luca Lass presented his topic “Amoebas eat fungi” and vividly explained his research into biofungicides. Thomas Kraus explored the question of whether ants can be used for heating, conveying complex chemical relationships with wit and unusual comparisons. Second place went to Lena Märtens with a presentation on populism, which she creatively linked to current events.

The other presentations were also met with enthusiasm: from video games from a cat’s perspective to reusable packaging and a ballad-like presentation of legal topics. The audience rewarded all the presentations with loud applause, demonstrating once again just how exciting science can be.
