Together with numerous initiatives, cities and cultural figures throughout Germany, democracy and its history will be celebrated on 13 March 2026 – with symposia, lectures, film screenings, music and theatre, neighbourhood festivals, democracy banquets and many other event formats to make this Democracy History Day a nationwide forum.
The aim is to make it clear that positive events and processes in our history of freedom, constitutionalism and parliamentarianism are also of great significance in terms of remembrance policy and, especially in times when democracy is under serious threat, form an important basis for our democratic social cohesion and make an important contribution to current democracy education and communication.
In light of this, Prof. Dr. Bodo Wiegand-Hoffmeister will focus his lecture on the democratic revolutions in Germany.
The patron of the nationwide campaign is Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
